Practice

I’ve been practising dying.
all the visceral detail,
where the light drains
and the breath ends
as the soul escapes,
with the mortal coils
slowly unfurling, and
shuffling off to…
maybe nothing at all.
it’s such a fear,
this end bit.
but once you imagine
a dozen scenarios,
then your internment
and decay;
the mourning of loved ones
as the relics of memory
also slip into the shadows,
perspective becomes clearer.
there is a lot less anxiety,
and an embracing of the Now
as you savour those sweet moments
(you, know, the ones where you
are definitely not
rehearsing your demise).
