Brave Knight 193
The breakers threw the boat upon the beach.
In night’s black cold the swirling waters laid
remains of coaster placed dead, giving each
man sweet surcease of danger sea thus made.
That night on saving beach the foursome stayed,
in blessed sleep men wait dawn’s morning rays,
to know where they were casted safe ashore,
then seek “au secours, S'il vous plait" from stays.
When “gens du peuple” know it’s monach they’ll give praise.
Next day the bourgeoisie took knights to Caen
where old Abbaye aux Hommes doth lay.
Church made of stone from northern mines with strain
of saffron color, chevet makes display.
A flying buttress seen, gives might to stay
the high walls, vaulting shows ribs’ new design,
thus giving nave a spacious place to pray.
Tall towers showing fingers skyward sign,
all nine pointing straight to heaven’s great God divine
