Homeless Joe
The first view of the man brought expressions to a drop,
as the light turned red and the cars came to a stop.
at the busy intersection he stood alone,
pondering the life he had formerly known.
but the loss of a job and eviction from his home,
left him with simply his clothes and a plastic comb.
in stark contrast with the happiness around him,
his eyes were wistful and his features were grim.
he pushed a cart containing his meager possessions,
and kept his head down to avoid the curious questions.
people glanced at him then turned their eyes away,
wanting nothing to interfere with the order of their day.
he wore a blue coat that was soiled and torn,
his thoughts on lost family that made him mourn.
the people clearly saw him but did not react,
choosing to ignore what is an obvious fact.
they closed their hearts and then they said,
'let someone else help the homeless man instead.'
the light turned green and the cars began to disappear ,
as the man walked on and quietly shed another tear.
