Dead Letter Postscript

Dear You,
Just an add-on to the last,
I know that we’re over and the past is past
But I want you to know, I’m doing okay,
And I hope that you’ll reply someday
So stop worrying that I’ll misread the signs
- I’m not longing for those times.
No, I’m not writing in blood, or tears,
Just plain black ink I bought through Sears
I’m not spilling my heart out in every word
(Even I’d think that’s absurd)
The return address this time, isn’t “Hell”
- I’ve climbed out of that well.
Anyway, I’ve finally got it through my head,
That little canary of emotions is dead
The bone cage is quiet, no shrill tweets,
Its just the blood pumping, a few soft beats
Still, I should have better read the signs
- When the bird stops breathing, the heart resigns.
I’ll close off now, but please reply,
Just a few lines, by and by
I’ve moved on from being rejected,
But do we have to be so disconnected?
Break ups are not victimless crimes
- So think of me sometimes.
Yours Truly,
